Before you choose
- Public placement is free. If the IEPIndividualized Education Program: a written plan for a child's special education services at school. team places your child in a special school, public or private, the district pays. State approved lists show where your district can place a student.
- Choosing a private school yourself is different. Your child may lose the individual right to a free appropriate public education. Read Private school and home school and Paying for it.
- Scholarship schools are mostly regular private schools. Accepting a scholarship does not mean a school offers special education. Ask what support your child would get, in writing.
- Visit, and ask for data: class size, staff training, how progress is measured, and how students move back to their home school.
- Trust tiers: schools from NCES are Public record. Schools from state and member lists are Registry Listings: call first. Their map spot is the middle of their ZIP code.
